St. George's Island

Last Saturday the Perkins Family set forth toward St. George's Island for a summer vacation.  While Dad, Mom, Royce, and Erin loaded the car to maximum capacity and started the drive from Atlanta, I packed two carry-on bags and took a quick flight from Charlotte to Tallahassee.  My chariot picked me up from the airport and we all headed an hour's drive south for sun, sand, and seafood.

Our first taste of seafood came from Up the Creek Raw Bar on the Apalachicola Bay.  A grouper sandwich, side of mango slaw, and waterfront dining was the perfect start to the vacation.  A quick visit to the gourmet Piggly Wiggly and local produce stand for groceries filled the car to the rafters and we had no choice to head beachfront.

A short time later we arrived at the Island Princess, our VRBO and home away from home for the week.  Nestled among palm trees and less than 50 feet from crashing ocean waves, it was the ideal location. The four-bedroom, four-bathroom home included a pool, hammock, and a wrap around deck with sunrise and sunset views.

Mom made a delicious enchilada casserole for our first night's dinner.  A hearty portion topped with guacamole and sour cream was a satisfying meal we all enjoyed prior to watching the sunset.  Other meals throughout the week included fresh grilled fish at the house, as well as meals out at Blue Parrot, Owl Cafe, Boss Oyster, and the Tap Room.

Since I was without a bike for the week and didn't have any interest in swimming in the ocean (I'm sure I would look like an ideal lunch for the sharks we witnessed), I stuck with running.  What I didn't anticipate was what a huge effect the high humidity and warm early  morning temperatures would have on my running abilities.  Needless to say, I made a few stops for pictures and catching my breath that first morning.  Regardless, any run that includes views such as these is priceless.

Although we didn't have a direct view of the sun setting into the water from the bayside, we were still able to enjoy the evening color and sunset from a corner of the deck.  Rocking in a chair on the deck and watching sunset is without a doubt the perfect way to relax after a day in the sun.

Relaxation was the name of the game this week.  We all rotated from place to place with our books and magazines, including the shaded deck, lounge chairs by the pool, float on noodles in the water, the hammock, and occasionally, the comfortable leather reclining chairs inside.

Naps were enjoyed by all, several novels were read cover to cover, and there were endless opportunities to kick back, relax, enjoy family time, and take in the sights and sounds of the ocean.

We all agreed that after last winter's trip to Whitefish, Montana where we froze in single digit temperatures, soaking up the sun felt fabulous!

We took two fishing trips during our stay - an offshore excursion on Tuesday and then an inshore and inlet trip on Thursday.  Evidently our fishing guide Paul has a reputation of catching, because this pelican landed on the boat as we were pulling away from the dock and hung around until we picked up speed.

The seas were nearly perfect on our first day and we headed 8 miles offshore in hunt of King Mackerel, which are known to put up an excellent fight.  That proved to be successful and we filled the cooler with six fish, all of which were quite sizable.

Check out the flounder that I caught when we were trolling in the inlet.  I suggest you don't come anywhere near his teeth!

Dad and Royce were loving every moment of the fishing trip and being on the boat.  Having grown up in Florida with a boat of our own and spending countless weekends fishing, boating, and skiing/knee boarding, boats and the water our one our family's most treasured memories.

While we were offshore a large pod of porpoises came by the boat chasing a school of fish.  They did quite a few jumps and put on a show for us to enjoy.

Back at the dock, we posed with our catch - five King Mackerel (the largest approximately 20 lbs) and one Spanish Mackerel.  Later that night we enjoyed some King Mackerel for dinner - prepared both blackened and fried by one of the local restaurants.

We ventured a few miles down the island to St. George Island National Park on Wednesday.  The secluded east end of the island is known for their pristine white sand beaches and excellent fishing.  We explored the area by foot on a 4.5 mile walk, collecting sand dollars and shells as we meandered.

There aren't many things in the summer that beat sunshine, ocean water, and toes in the sand.
The water along these undisturbed beaches was beautifully clear, and combined with nearly cloudless skies, made for a picture perfect morning stroll.

Apalachicola Bay is known throughout the country for their oysters, and we did our fare share of eating them at several meals.  Our favorites were the char grilled variety from Boss Oyster.  However, the large plump raw oysters with a squeeze of lemon, cocktail sauce, horseradish, and a saltine cracker is an awesome mouthful!

The weather was picture perfect for the entire week, with the exception of a single afternoon when a thunderstorm rolled through for about an hour.  Otherwise temperatures were in the low to mid 80s with variable winds and sunny skies all week long.

My favorite mornings included sleeping in, lounging in pajamas, making a pot of Fresh Market vanilla maple coffee, and sipping it on the back deck while watching the morning ocean waves.

Each afternoon we continued to soak up the sun by the pool (while coated in a heavy layer of sunscreen - Dad's melanoma scare had us all being extra careful) and cooled off with dips in the pool.

We rented bikes for the week and took them out for a spin around the island several afternoons as well as in the evenings to watch the sun set.

No trip would be complete without a family game of dominos!  It's a tradition that dates back to our annual summer vacations in the Florida Keys and one which I can't imagine we will ever forget.  There are always abundant laughs as we build successful (or unsuccessful) trains and keep up with the trash train.

Our last full day was the definition of beach paradise.  The ocean literally looked like a lake since the winds died down.  Dad and I spent several hours fishing that morning and caught several small fish that weren't keepers.  Once again, a morning cup of coffee at the water's edge was a necessity.

At the beginning of the week we all commented that we had seven whole days to rest, relax, and soak up the sun and the sand.  Then suddenly it was Friday night and the days had vanished in a blink of an eye.  That must be a sign of an awesome beach vacation!  Although Royce and I are getting older, we both treasure our annual family vacations and hope that we can continue to make these memories for endless years to come!  Thanks for a great week at St. George's Island Mom and Dad!

Match Day! and Staycation

The long-awaited pediatric orthopaedic fellowship match day was Friday, April 10th and I'm beyond excited to announce that I matched at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Scottish Rite!  After having closely looked at 11 programs across the country, I knew without a doubt that Scottish Rite was the perfect place for my final year of training.  And even more exciting - I'm moving back home!  I'll still be enjoying Charlotte for a bit longer though, since fellowship doesn't begin until August 2016.

After celebrating the start of staycation with my parents at Taste of the Nation on Wednesday night, Thursday brought a much needed morning to sleep in and be lazy before Dad, Bailey, and I conquered a cold and rainy 6.5 mile run through Myers Park.  Afterwards, we went to 7th Street Public Market for lunch.  Mom and I shared an arugula salad with a fresh lemon dressing and wild mushroom pizza from Pure Pizza.  The sprouted grain crust dipped in whipped cinnamon honey was a sweet treat.

After taking a work trip to Hendrick Motor Sports a few months ago, I knew it would be a fun afternoon activity for Dad's birthday.  We were fortunate to receive a private behind the scenes tour through the entire facility and Dad seemed to really enjoy it.

Flanked by his NASCAR idols - Dale Earnhardt Jr and Jimmy Johnson
Royce, Erin, and their dog Kahlua arrived Thursday evening to join us for the weekend.  That night we enjoyed a fantastic meal at 300 East to celebrate Dad's birthday.

After more than 48 hours of cold and rain, it finally started to dry out on Friday.  We all packed in to the car and made the short drive to Crowder's Mountain for an afternoon of hiking.  All of the humans and the two 4-legged friends completed an 8 mile hike with nearly 2000 feet of elevation change and some technical stretches of rocks.

Mom, Dad, and Bailey were looking as great as ever and are always up for an adventure in the woods.  I'm so happy I get to be closer to the whole family again next year.

For a brief period of time, the clouds started to clear and Erin, Bailey, and I climbed out on some rocks to capture the view.

I wish I had a video of these two crazy animals during our drive to Crowder's Mountain.  There was endless whining, barking, and attempts to climb over the seat.  Kahlua is a nervous traveler and Bailey wasn't happy that she had to share a seat that she normally has to herself.  After 3 hours of hiking, however, they curled up and slept in silence the whole ride home.

Rooster's Southpark was the location for our dinner on Friday night.  I've dined here once before and was impressed with Jim Noble's approach to local and organic proteins and produce.  Although our waitress left something to be desired, we all thoroughly enjoyed our meals.

I had the flounder special with cremini mushrooms, asparagus, and ramp puree.  The portion size was perfect and the fresh flavors paired wonderfully together.

Sides are served a la carte, so we selected a few for the table.  The mac and cheese is unique in that it is made with a rich parmesan cream.  The fried okra with a sriracha aioli was enjoyed by all.  And lastly, the asparagus were the most tender any of us eaten.

And since we were celebrating - Dad's birthday and my fellowship match - desserts were a necessity. We shared the coconut cake and chocolate mouse five ways and had no difficulty cleaning the plates.

Saturday featured several of my favorite Charlotte activities, including a long run through Freedom Park, a caramel latte from Not Just Coffee, a stop at Savory Spice Shop, and trips to both Atherton Mill and Regional farmer's markets.

I said goodbye to my family and favorite pups on Saturday afternoon and enjoyed being lazy for the remainder of a very rainy weekend in Charlotte.  Tomorrow is a big day in the running world - the Boston Marathon!  I have many friends racing and I wish them all the best of luck on what is promised to be a very rainy, windy, and cold day.

Taste of the Nation 2015

Taste of the Nation is without a doubt my favorite annual Charlotte event.  I've professed my love for the food, drink, and charity multiple times in the past (2012, 2013, and 2014), but I'll give you a brief idea of what you're missing if you have yet to attend.

Taste of the Nation combines an elaborate celebration of Charlotte's best chefs and restaurants, endless wine and crafty cocktails, live entertainment, wine grab-bags, and a silent auction to yield a fabulous evening for fundraising for No Kid Hungry and local beneficiaries Second Harvest Food Bank and Community Culinary School of Charlotte.  My fabulous parents even traveled from Atlanta to join me for the evening of food and fun.

If my description of the event isn't enough to interest you, let me swoon your senses with pictures of many of the delicious bites that graced my palate this evening.

AAOS in Las Vegas

I spent the past five days in Las Vegas at the AAOS Annual Meeting.  It's a massive orthopaedic meeting, with nearly 15,000 US and International attendees.  In addition, there are hundreds of different vendors, ranging from electronic medical records to implants for hip and knee arthroplasty to injectables.  Each day is packed full of courses, research, and case presentations.

I stayed at the Trump International Hotel, located just off the strip.  If you're planning a trip to Las Vegas, I can't recommend this hotel enough.  It's smoke-free, casino-less, and perfect for those who want an escape from the wild and crazy of the Vegas strip.  The rooms are spacious, bathrooms are massive, and the beds are the most comfortable I've ever slept in.

Thursday's breakfast was from Bouchon Bakery - a place I discovered in NYC when I was there in January.  In addition to a soy latte, I had my first almond croissant and it is definitely my new favorite breakfast pastry.

The conference was held in the Sands Expo within the Venetian.  The Venetian and Palazzo Hotels are connected by an upscale shopping mall that is filled with celebrity chef restaurants as well as gondolas navigating the Grand Canal.  The murals on the ceilings appear surprisingly real.

The weather was absolutely perfect for our stay - sunny, a light breeze, cloudless skies, and highs in the 80s.  The walk from the Trump to the conference center was about 15 minutes and I soaked up every sunny moment.  I was impressed at how immaculate the sidewalks and grounds were maintained.

Thursday night we dined at Mon Ami Gabi, and it was the best meal of the trip.  The restaurant was positioned directly across the street from The Bellagio and their famous fountains.  Despite not having reservations, we scored the perfect table for eight on the patio.  The fountains were easily visible from our table and we were able to enjoy the display of water, lights, and music every fifteen minutes for nearly three hours.  My dinner of french onion soup and mustard crusted salmon with butternut puree and brussel sprouts was perfectly executed.

After a long winter and seemingly endless travel in ice and snow, the bright sunshine was a welcome sight.  Each morning's walk into the sunshine was one of my favorites of the day.

No conference is complete without a bit of time for rest and relaxation, and in Las Vegas, that meant time by the pool.  The sun felt so amazing!

The poolside restaurant, H2 Eau, was impressive both in food options as well as price.  The Farm Salad included baby kale, quinoa, sunflower seeds, and cranberries, and was served with a hearty portion of waffle fries.

Each night after dinner we found ourselves at a different casino to try our luck at gambling.  Despite previous gambling successes in the Caribbean, my attempts at the penny slots left me $30 poorer than I had arrived.  Eventually the rowdy crowds and heavy cigarette smoke became too much and we returned to the Trump.

So, what's my verdict on Vegas?  I won't be back.  It's an odd combination of sights, sounds, and entertainment that is similar to an adult Disney World on steroids.  There are essentially two groups - college kids/young couples that are sloppy drunk and running wild without any restraint and older smokers in wheelchairs on oxygen and smoking at the slots.  It's a bizarre scene!  Restaurants are ridiculously expensive and food is underwhelming.  Nightly entertainment is limited to shows (tickets $150+), gambling, or strip clubs.  Drunken fools line the streets both morning and night and people try to shove strip club advertisements in your face everywhere you walk.  Sound enticing?

After five days of Las Vegas adventures, I was never more thankful to return home to Charlotte.

An Unlucky St. Patty's

Yesterday was a bit of an epic failure.  I'm pretty sure there's not any Irish heritage in my blood, but regardless, it's always fun to dress in green and hope for a little extra luck on St. Patrick's Day.  Yesterday was especially important because it was the day that Ironman announced the 2015 Kona Lottery winners.  Despite being told that the announcement would happen at 12 noon, I was checking my email nonstop from the time I woke up.  I dressed in green, crossed my fingers, and hoped to see an email from Ironman pop up in the inbox.  Unfortunately, the luck of the Irish didn't fall on my side and I won't be in Kona in October.  I'm not sure who's more disappointed - me or my family who was planning an epic vacation to the Big Island.

I'd been craving the traditional St. Patty's meal consisting of corned beef, cabbage, and potatoes.  Growing up Mom always made that for us once a year and I remember loving each and every bite smothered with some mustard.  I picked up cabbage and potatoes at the farmers market and planned to stop by the Earth Fare hot bar on the way home to pick up some corned beef.  Unfortunately, their advertised St. Patty's hot bar special didn't include that particular item.  Not a problem I thought, Whole Foods is just across the street and will certainly have some.  Sadly, there wasn't any corned beef to be had there either.  And then I got home to discover that the bag of sweet potatoes that I planned to eat was covered in mold.  Lovely.

Frustrated, saddened about the Kona news, and tired, I came home and sat on the back deck and drank a Kombucha.  Eventually I threw some leftovers and an egg on top of lettuce and called it dinner.

Fortunately, today has been a much better day.  The morning started with 3800 meter in the pool that felt better than the previous few weeks' swims.  Lunch featured my favorite sandwich - avocado, tomato, hummus, and arugula on Great Harvest bread - paired with an apple dusted with cinnamon.  A refreshing nap in the sunshine energized some research and a late afternoon run.

The goal of tonight's dinner was to make up for the sadness of last night's meal.  Cabbage steaks were sliced, rubbed with garlic cloves and olive oil, and dusted with salt and pepper.  Sweet potatoes were cut into fries, rubbed with coconut oil, and dusted with cinnamon and cumin.  While they cooked, I seasoned some wild cod with garlic and a citrus herb seasoning and added it to the oven for the last ten minutes of cooking time.

Dinner is served!  I added some mustard to the cabbage and ketchup for the sweet potatoes, and I had a very satisfying dinner.

While I was in the kitchen prepping dinner ingredients, there were three bananas on their last days of life staring back at me.  I don't know about you, but once bananas start getting brown spots, I refuse to eat them raw.  Typically they get put in the freezer and used for smoothies.  Today, however, they were the key ingredient in browned butter banana bread.  The end result is a house that smells divine and some coworkers who will have a morning treat tomorrow.

And one last meal that's worth a picture - my Pi Day pizza.  Great Harvest just so happened to be selling pizzas on their garlic herb crust for just $3.14.  With the addition of extra tomato sauce and bell peppers, my pizza craving was satisfied.

How was your St. Patty's Day?  Did you remember to wear your green?
